Personal diaries with entries commenting on the weather, local and national events, and mill activity. The mill is thought to be the Great Falls Manufacturing Company, a cotton manufacturer in Great Falls, N.H. There are comparisons with mills in Lowell, Mass. and Newmarket, N.H. There is also a notebook, 1846-1860, with mill costs including figures for production, wages, etc., a machinery inventory, and a record of painting and repairs, 1867.

John S. Haines managed Haines Groceries of Missoula, Montana through the 1950s and 1960s. By the 1970s he was serving as Missoula City Treasurer. He married Mildred Strom in 1938.
